Wouldn’t parenting be so much easier if we had a to use on our child?

“That’s ENOUGH!” is what my husband usually ends up shouting when Joshua, our 3 year old, has a meltdown. Of course, aside from the loud bellow that startles and scares him, Joshua always ends up crying even more. After a few minutes of sobbing and pain-filled stares at his tormentor, his dad would usually come over, give him a hug and tries to calm him down. Winner: The 3 year old!

Now wouldn’t things have gone smoother if his dad just fast forwards to the calming, soothing mode instead of going ballistic? Tantrums and meltdowns are part and parcel of having a toddler and preschooler so we can’t avoid going through that experience. But it would be so much easier if we had a script to follow so we can easily diffuse the situation.

Here’s a helpful Infographic with a discipline cheat sheet. It shows suggestions of what phrases to use instead of the usual angry words we end up shouting. It’s a very easy discipline script to follow and would likely keep our sanity as parents intact.

These phrases only add chaos to the situation. What might have been a moment of impulse or challenging behavior can now threaten to become a full-on meltdown. Instead of escalating the situation, I have some handy alternative suggestions to cultivate a little connection and lovin’.
